The thoracic spine lies between the neck (cervical spine) and the lower back (lumbar spine). It consists of 12 vertebrae that are distinct in shape and function, with stability provided in this region at the expense of mobility. The thoracic spine also provides a site for muscle and connective tissue attachment from the head, neck, shoulder blade, collarbone, lower back and pelvis as well as connections to organs in the rib cage and abdomen. It has a role in breathing, protects vital organs and has a relationship to emotions and the nerves that control the ‘fight or flight’ response. Thoracic spine injuries make up about 15% of all spinal issues presenting to us here at KRP.
