Tennis elbow is probably the most common cause of pain felt on the outside of the elbow. It typically relates to an overuse injury. Pain occurs after repeated activities that include gripping, lifting, pruning and tennis. Elbow pain diagnosis is important in the early stages.

Tennis elbow involves a tendon that attaches at the elbow and connects to muscles that control movement in the wrist. This tendon becomes painful after repetitive strain. Pain can occur suddenly after an extra load of work, (like a big weekend of pruning), or more gradually after years of repeated activity.

Tennis elbow is common among people who perform heavy gripping, repetitive wrist movements or work with an outstretched arm. These include people with elbow pain from the gym, tennis players, golfers, musicians and manual workers.

Hand and wrist fractures occur when one or more of the bones in your wrist or hand, such as the scaphoid, are broken. A wrist fracture can also occur in the form of a distal radius fracture which is where the forearm bone breaks close to the wrist joint.

Hand and wrist fractures commonly occur when people fall and land on their outstretched hands. Hand and wrist fractures are also common in sports such as skating or snowboarding. People with osteoporosis are also at risk of these fractures.

Hand joint pain caused by osteoarthritis is becoming more regular considering how much we use our hands in this day and age. It is often associated with pain in the wrist and hand.

Tendinopathy (previously called tendonitis) is a term used to describe pain, swelling and damage to any tendon in the body. Wrist tendon pain or Tendinopathy can be caused by injury, overuse of the tendon, or wear and tear through ageing.

Tendons attach muscle to bone. There are 23 tendons that cross the wrist into the hand. These tendons allow our hands to perform both delicate movements and powerful work.

Tendinopathy commonly occurs after an extra ‘load’ on the tendon. This ‘load’ can be an overly strong stretch, lifting a heavy weight, or increased repetitive use of the tendon. Wrist and hand tendinopathy is common in people whose work requires repeated use of their hands, such as musicians and computer typists.
